Around
Montreal and beyond, high school graduates are eagerly - and
stressfully - preparing for prom, a rite of passage, perhaps, and town
that is the first time most young women of 16 or 17 don a fancy dress or
gown to step out on the.
While
college students are caught up in turmoil tuition, many secondary
students about to graduate are dealing with prom plans: the date, the
limo, ballkleider günstig, the after-party, the cost, and the crucial dress. The hunt for the dress as much as six often starts months in advance. As for any affair, one wants to be original, so shops like Le Château and Betsey Johnson prom keep registries.
There's another way to be almost certain you are the one and only in that cute little frock or gown fashion: vintage shop.
Spin
we went "shopping" with two soon-to-be graduates at The Little Shop in
Park Extension, one of the funkiest vintage shops anywhere, abendkleider online, with a
collections of dresses, accessories and more to make your head.
Goulem Bella and Claire Smale, both 17 and graduating from Villa Maria this June, were game to try on anything.
Because
there are few shops that sell "really proper" prom dresses, Claire
says, girls wind up choosing the same styles, concept the same. "I think it's fun to do something different."
Both
girls had recently bought their prom dresses, Bella, a gown with a
sweetheart neckline from BCBG in pastel ombré, Claire a neon pink short
dress from DKNY.
Both dresses were unexpected choices. abendkleider lang, And both wound up costing in the $ 300 range, a bit more than their budgets, but parents and family pitched in.
Claire thought she would wear something black, but the pink won out.
Bella went long rather than short. "I like that it makes me look taller. I like Scoop. It's just something I would never wear other than going to prom, "Bella said.
That did not stop them from trying on a succession of dresses and gowns at The Little Store. Running
through the racks, abendkleider günstig, to '80s-vintage purple and green dress was
definitely Bella, a demure black and white dress with sleeves what
Claire.
"It's not as Prommy,'' Claire observes.
"You can wear it for prom. You just have to be a little more confident than everyone else. Everyone else looks the same. "
For
Claire, a '50s cropped top with beaded satin fishtail skirt current, a
blue satin halter in the '50s and '60s style pleated Marilyn little
black dress that is made on the try-cut. Bella
tried a red flouncy gown, a '50s beaded fitted cream dress and a cream
Grecian style gown - mostly with a pair of Cinderella slippers in clear
plastic.
"There's
a fine line with vintage" It could be costumey or it could be
wearable,'' says Jill Moroz, who runs The Little Store, inherited from
her mother, Anne Silverstone. Silverstone,
who died four years ago just short of her 90th birthday, ran the shop
for 50-odd years, to creating endearing institution in the city for
costumers and Decoration for theater and film.
The girls want to fit in, look good and reveal the same amount of skin, Moroz says. "At the same time they do want to stand out."
A great way to do that is with accessories, she advises. Gloves are an easy option - and you can take them off
"It would be cool to wear gloves. It's better to stand out,'' says Claire.
Their
prom is June 23 at Chateau Vaudreuil, to be followed by an after party,
a sleepover at the Loft Hotel and breakfast, where the girls will open
time capsules they prepared, predicting what they think the future
holds.
"It's not the biggest day of my life,'' says Claire. "It's significant because it's the end of high school. But it's not the be all and end ave "
She
does not feel it's a rite of passage to womanhood or adulthood, and
states: "I do not have to have a fancy dress or a fancy dinner to do all
that."
Prom is a big deal, says Bella. She's been thinking about it all through high school. "Now
I'm just stressed,'' she said, listing the planning, details like
limos, her date having a good time, the hotel, the dress and the
after-prom outfit.
Bella had never thought of prom as a rite of passage, but agrees it is. "You only get one. You're only going to graduate once. "
The fashion is important because everyone wants to remember what you wear, she says. "Everyone is looking at what you're wearing. That's a huge factor in prom. "
At most schools, it's pretty important, Claire agrees, "which I think is sort of ridiculous. I do not think it's what you wear, it's who you're with and that sort of thing.
"But
it is a nice occasion because we do not always get super dressed up And
there are going to be 10 gazillion photos that day."
Both girls head to Dawson College in fall, to concentrate on Claire North-South studies, studies on child Bella.
